Staxel Board: Talking Letter Board

Terms of Use

These terms govern your use of Staxel Board — the Staxel Board application for iPhone and iPad (the App) — made by Staxel (we, us). By installing or using the App you agree to them.

1. What the App is

Staxel Board is a letter board that speaks. You spell a message on it — with a finger, or with a hand cursor driven by the front camera — and the device reads it out. It can put the board on a connected television while the device keeps the camera. It runs entirely on your device: there is no account, no server behind it, and it makes no network requests. 2. Licence

We grant you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable licence to use the App on devices you own or control, under Apple’s standard End User Licence Agreement, which applies to the App alongside these terms. You may not copy, sell, rent, reverse-engineer or redistribute the App, except where the law says you may regardless of what this paragraph says.

3. What you type is yours

Your messages, your saved sentences and the words the board has learned from you are yours, and they stay on your device. We claim no licence over them and no rights in them, because we never receive them. Nothing in these terms gives us access to anything you write.

4. Price

The App is offered without charge and contains no purchases, no subscription and no advertising. If that ever changes, it will change for future versions and will be stated where the App is listed, before you install one.

5. It is a communication aid, not a medical device

  • Staxel Board is not a medical device and is not intended to diagnose, treat or manage any condition. It has not been submitted to, or cleared by, any medical regulator.
  • Do not rely on it in an emergency. It is software on a consumer device: the battery runs out, the operating system interrupts it, the camera fails in the dark, and any app can crash. Anyone who depends on it to communicate should also have a way to be understood that does not need a working iPad — including a paper board.
  • Hand tracking is a best effort, not a guarantee. Lighting, distance, clothing, background and the device’s own load all change how well the cursor follows a hand, and some hands and some rooms will work less well than others.
  • Word suggestions and glide typing are predictions. They are frequently wrong, and the person using the board — not the prediction — decides what the message says. Check a message before you speak for someone with it.

6. Acceptable use

  • Do not use the App to harass, defame or impersonate anyone, or to produce anything unlawful.
  • The camera is for driving the cursor. Do not use the App, or the device running it, to observe or record anyone without their knowledge — it has no recording feature, and pointing it at people for that purpose is a misuse of it.
  • Do not attempt to modify the App or bypass the protections Apple places around it on the devices of others.

7. Children and supervision

The App is built to be used by children as well as adults. If you set it up for a child, you are responsible for supervising their use of it and for the device it runs on. It collects nothing about anyone, child or adult.

8. Availability and changes

We may change or discontinue features in future versions. A version already installed on your device keeps working — there is no server we can switch off underneath it. You may stop using the App at any time by deleting it, which also deletes everything it kept.

9. Disclaimers and liability

The App is provided “as is” and “as available”. To the maximum extent permitted by law, we disclaim implied warranties, and our total liability arising out of the App is limited to the amount you paid for it. Nothing in these terms limits liability that cannot lawfully be limited, including for death or personal injury caused by negligence, or for fraud.

10. Apple

Apple is not a party to these terms and has no obligation to furnish maintenance or support for the App. Apple is, however, a third-party beneficiary of these terms and may enforce them against you. Any claim that the App fails to conform to a warranty is ours to answer, not Apple’s.

11. Governing law

These terms are governed by the law of the jurisdiction in which Staxel is established, without regard to conflict-of-law rules.
