Before you write

• The hand cursor will not follow my hand. Check that Staxel Board has camera access, in iOS Settings under the app. Then try more light, and a hand a little closer to the device. If it is still poor, open the settings drawer, choose Camera & tracking…, and switch Hand tracking to the other engine — the two behave differently at distance and in dim rooms. Turning up the background wash, in the drawer’s Gestures section, lets you see enough of yourself to tell where your hands actually are.
• It does not speak. Open the settings drawer and check that All sounds at the top of the Sounds section is on — it is one switch that silences everything, and it is the usual answer. Letter spelling and word spelling are separate switches under it. The board is meant to speak even with the ring switch set to silent; if it does not, tell us the device and what you have in Sounds.
• The keys are too small. Two things make them bigger and they work together: step the size up with the badge in the keyboard’s top-left corner, and hide the message history with the rail down the board’s outer edge, which hands the keys the whole width the panel was using. Beyond that, Handedness in Settings → Layout moves the panel and the drawer to the other side.
• I want it to be an ordinary keyboard. Turn off Hand control at the top of the drawer’s Gestures section. That takes away the cursor, the hold gestures and the hand outline in one move, and leaves the whole board worked by finger.
• On a TV. Connect by AirPlay or a cable and the board moves to the screen, laid out for it, while the iPad becomes a small panel with Settings and Exit — the iPad is still doing the camera and the tracking, which is why the board is not also on it. To have the board on both, turn on Keep a board on this device too in Settings → Display. If the TV crops the board’s edges, the underscan setting is on the same screen.
• Saved sentences. They live on the device and nowhere else — we have no copy, and there is nothing for us to restore. Deleting the app deletes them. The list keeps the 50 most recent; pin the ones that matter and they are kept past that.
• Where the rest of the settings are. The drawer, from the Settings key at the keyboard’s top right, holds everything that changes during a session. Camera, tracking, pointer tuning, individual voices and display settings are in Advanced — from the drawer’s Camera & tracking…, or by shaking the device from anywhere.
